Is bank interest taxable for F-1 students? Your 1099-INT explained

Why US bank interest is tax-free for nonresident aliens, why your bank still sent a Form 1099-INT, how a Form W-8BEN fixes it, and what changes when you become a resident alien.

In short

  1. For tax year 2026, interest from a US bank, savings and loan or credit union is not taxable for a nonresident alien unless it is connected with a US business.
  2. Do not put that interest on Form 1040-NR line 2b (the line number on the 2025 form and the 2026 draft), even if the bank sent you a Form 1099-INT.
  3. A Form 1099-INT usually means the bank treats you as a US person. Give it a Form W-8BEN so it knows you are a nonresident alien.
  4. Interest on US Treasury securities is also tax-free for a nonresident alien whose foreign status is on file with the payer, usually on Form W-8BEN.
  5. The exemption ends in the year you become a resident alien, usually your sixth calendar year on F-1. From then on, all your interest, US and foreign, goes on Form 1040.

No. For tax year 2026, interest from a US bank or credit union is not taxable for a nonresident alien. It does not go on Form 1040-NR, even if the bank sent you a Form 1099-INT.

Most F-1 and J-1 students are nonresident aliens for their first five calendar years in the US. In those years the rule covers savings and checking accounts, CDs and online high-yield savings accounts at US banks. The only exception, interest connected with a US business you run, rarely applies to students. The rule changes in the year you become a resident alien.

Why is US bank interest tax-free for a nonresident alien?

Section 871(i) of the Internal Revenue Code exempts a nonresident alien's interest on deposits with US banks and credit unions (26 U.S.C. 871). The one exception is interest connected with a US business. The IRS says nonresident aliens "are not taxed on certain kinds of interest income". That includes deposit interest not connected with a US business, from a US bank, savings and loan, credit union or insurance company (IRS).

Publication 519 lists the deposits covered, including certificates of deposit and accounts at credit unions and similar institutions. An online high-yield savings account at a US bank is still a bank deposit.

The 2025 Form 1040-NR instructions say not to include this exempt interest on line 2b. On the 2026 draft Form 1040-NR, line 2b ("Taxable interest") still sits in the section for income effectively connected with a US business. The 2026 instructions are not published yet, so check the wording when they appear.

Why did my bank send me a Form 1099-INT?

A Form 1099-INT usually means the bank has you on file as a US person, for example because you signed a Form W-9 when you opened the account. The form reports what the bank paid you; it does not make the interest taxable.

Form W-9 is for US persons, including resident aliens. A nonresident alien gives Form W-8BEN instead (W-8BEN instructions). A payer generally files Form 1099-INT for interest of $10 or more in a year (1099-INT instructions).

Box on Form 1099-INT What it shows What a nonresident alien does
Box 1, interest income Bank interest and other interest not in box 3 Leave bank interest off Form 1040-NR
Box 3, interest on US Savings Bonds and Treasury obligations Interest on Treasury securities Read the Treasury rule below
Box 4, federal income tax withheld Backup withholding Claim it on Form 1040-NR line 25b

Keep the 1099-INT with your tax records, even though nothing from box 1 goes on your return.

Got a Form 1042-S for bank interest instead?

A bank must report deposit interest of $10 or more on Form 1042-S, under income code 29, when it pays a nonresident alien who lives in a country on an IRS list (Rev. Proc. 2024-42). A bank may also choose to report it for every nonresident alien (2026 Form 1042-S instructions; Treas. Reg. 1.6049-8). That report does not make the interest taxable. See our guide to Form 1042-S.

How do I tell my bank I am a nonresident alien?

Give the bank a Form W-8BEN. The form establishes that you are not a US person for tax, so the bank can stop treating you as one (IRS). With neither a Form W-8BEN nor a Form W-9 on file, a bank can apply backup withholding at 24% (IRC 3406).

Ask each US bank and broker where you earn interest how it wants to receive the form. A Form W-8BEN signed in 2026 generally stays valid through Monday, December 31, 2029, unless a change in circumstances makes it incorrect (W-8BEN instructions; Treas. Reg. 1.1441-1). Becoming a resident alien is such a change. The W-8BEN instructions say to tell the bank within 30 days of becoming a resident alien, and you may have to give it a Form W-9.

Watch out

Do not sign a new Form W-9 for a US bank or broker while you are a nonresident alien. Form W-9 is for US persons, so the bank will report your interest as if you were one.

What if the bank withheld tax from my interest?

Box 4 of Form 1099-INT shows backup withholding, and you claim it back on line 25b of Form 1040-NR (the 2025 form and the 2026 draft). The 2025 Form 1040-NR instructions say to enter there the total US tax withheld on Forms 1099. To claim a refund of backup withholding, attach a copy of the Form 1099 that shows the income and the amount withheld.

You file Form 1040-NR to get the money back, even if bank interest was your only US income. With no wages subject to withholding, a 2026 return is due Tuesday, June 15, 2027 (tax deadlines for 2027).

Which interest is taxable for a nonresident alien?

Interest is taxable for a nonresident alien when it is connected with a US business, or when it is US-source interest that no exemption covers. Both are uncommon for students.

Interest from Taxable for a nonresident alien in 2026? Where it goes
An account or CD at a US bank or credit union No Nowhere on Form 1040-NR
US Treasury securities No, if the payer has your Form W-8BEN Nowhere on Form 1040-NR
A bank account or fixed deposit in your home country No: it is not US income Nowhere on Form 1040-NR
A US money market fund or bond fund Paid as dividends; part can be exempt Check the form your broker sends
Interest connected with a US business you run Yes, at the graduated rates Form 1040-NR, as effectively connected income
Other US-source interest that no exemption covers Yes, at 30% or a lower treaty rate Schedule NEC line 2 (2025 form)

Interest on US Treasury securities is "portfolio interest". It is tax-free for a nonresident alien whose foreign status is documented with the payer, usually on Form W-8BEN (IRS). Interest on other bonds issued in registered form after July 18, 1984 generally counts too (Publication 519). Contingent interest and interest paid to someone who owns 10% or more of the issuer do not. The IRS says the tax code usually requires payers to report this interest when it is paid to a nonresident alien (IRS), but reporting does not make it taxable.

Unlike bank interest, portfolio interest depends on the payer having your Form W-8BEN. A 1099-INT from a broker with an amount in box 3 usually means the broker has a Form W-9 from you. Give it a Form W-8BEN now, and ask a tax professional how to report the interest it already paid.

Money market and bond fund payouts are dividends. Part can be exempt as "interest-related dividends" if the fund designates them that way (IRC 871(k)); our stocks and crypto guide covers dividends. Other taxable interest not connected with a business is taxed at a flat 30%, or a lower treaty rate, on line 2 of the 2025 Schedule NEC (Publication 519).

How much does leaving bank interest off change my tax?

Leaving exempt bank interest off Form 1040-NR saves the tax you would otherwise pay on it at your top rate. For 2026 that rate is 10% or 12% on taxable income up to $50,400 (IRS).

Worked example: Lucas, F-1 student, arrived August 2024

Lucas is an illustrative F-1 student who first came to the US in August 2024 and claims no tax treaty. 2026 is his third calendar year in the US, so he is a nonresident alien and cannot take the standard deduction. His on-campus job paid $14,000 (W-2 box 1), with no state tax withheld. His online savings account at a US bank paid $420, shown in box 1 of a Form 1099-INT.

Line (2026 draft Form 1040-NR) Correct return Interest wrongly included
1awages $14,000 $14,000
2btaxable interest $0 $420
15taxable income (no deductions) $14,000 $14,420
16tax about $1,432 about $1,482

Correct return: 10% of $12,400 = $1,240, plus 12% of $1,600 ($14,000 minus $12,400) = $192. The total is $1,432. With the interest included, the 12% part becomes 12% of $2,020 = $242.40, so the tax is about $1,482.

Including the interest by mistake would cost Lucas 12% of $420 = $50.40. The 2026 Tax Table, not yet published, can differ from these figures by a few dollars. Lucas leaves the $420 off his return and gives his bank a Form W-8BEN.

What changes when I become a resident alien?

The exemption ends in the year you become a resident alien for tax. From then on your interest is taxable wherever the bank is, including in your home country, and you report it on Form 1040.

For most F-1 students that is the sixth calendar year in the US. Students exclude their days for 5 calendar years in total, and any part of a year counts as a whole year (IRS). A sixth-year student who is in the US on January 1, 2026 and present at least 183 days in 2026 is a resident alien for all of 2026. The exception is a student who qualifies under Form 8843 line 12 (your sixth year on F-1).

A year in which you become a resident partway through is dual-status: worldwide income is taxed only from your residency start date (F-1 to H-1B).

In your first resident year:

  1. Within 30 days of becoming a resident alien, tell each US bank and broker, and give it a Form W-9 to replace your Form W-8BEN.
  2. Report all your interest on Form 1040. F1TaxReturn does not prepare Form 1040 or dual-status returns.
  3. Check whether you must file an FBAR. A resident alien files one if foreign accounts together were worth more than $10,000 at any time in the year (IRS). The 2026 FBAR is due Thursday, April 15, 2027, with an automatic extension to Friday, October 15, 2027 (FBAR guide).

Does my state tax my bank interest?

Your state can count bank interest that the IRS does not tax, because state rules are separate from the federal exemption. California's 2025 instructions for Schedule CA (540NR) tell a nonresident alien to adjust federal AGI to include income from all sources. They add that California has no special rule limiting that total to US-source or effectively connected income (FTB).

So bank interest you leave off Form 1040-NR can still count on a California Form 540NR. Form 540NR works out tax on your income from all sources and applies that rate to your California income, so the interest can raise your California tax rate. For any part of the year you were a California resident, the interest is California income itself.

This page does not cover New York, Illinois or Massachusetts; read their instructions. Our state income tax guide explains which state returns a student files.

What to do next

  1. Confirm that you are a nonresident alien for 2026 with the substantial presence test guide.
  2. Give a Form W-8BEN to each US bank and broker that has a Form W-9 from you, or no form at all.
  3. A bank that sends you a 2026 Form 1099-INT must send it by Monday, February 1, 2027 (January 31 is a Sunday). Allow a few days for it to arrive. Leave box 1 bank interest off Form 1040-NR. Claim any box 4 withholding on line 25b and attach a copy of the form.
  4. If you had wages subject to US income tax withholding, such as an on-campus job reported on a W-2, file Form 1040-NR with Form 8843 by Thursday, April 15, 2027 (how to fill out Form 1040-NR).
  5. If exempt bank interest was your only US income and nothing was withheld, mail only Form 8843 by Tuesday, June 15, 2027. Send it to Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Center, Austin, TX 73301-0215 (Form 8843 guide).

F1TaxReturn takes your Form 1099-INT and leaves bank interest off Form 1040-NR. The federal Form 1040-NR and Form 8843 are free, and the software prepares 2026 returns once the IRS publishes the final 2026 forms (start a return).

Questions students ask

Do I have to report my high-yield savings interest as an F-1 student?

Not while you are a nonresident alien. Interest from a US bank, savings and loan or credit union, including an online high-yield savings account at a US bank, is not taxable for a nonresident alien and does not go on Form 1040-NR. You report it once you become a resident alien, usually in your sixth calendar year in the US.

My bank sent me a 1099-INT. Does that mean I owe tax on the interest?

No. A Form 1099-INT usually means the bank has you on file as a US person, often because you signed a Form W-9 when you opened the account. Leave the bank interest off Form 1040-NR and give the bank a Form W-8BEN. If box 4 shows tax withheld, claim it on Form 1040-NR line 25b.

I already filed and included my bank interest. What should I do?

If you reported exempt bank interest as income on Form 1040-NR, you may have paid tax you did not owe. You can correct the return with Form 1040-X and a corrected Form 1040-NR marked "Amended". A refund claim must be filed within 3 years after the original return or 2 years after you paid the tax, whichever is later.

If bank interest was my only US income, do I file Form 1040-NR?

No. An F-1 or J-1 student with no income subject to US tax does not file Form 1040-NR, but still files Form 8843. For tax year 2026, mail Form 8843 by Tuesday, June 15, 2027. The exception is a refund: if the bank withheld tax, you file Form 1040-NR to get it back.

Do I report interest from my bank account in my home country?

Not on Form 1040-NR. Interest from a bank account in your home country is foreign-source income, which a nonresident alien does not report, and a nonresident alien does not file an FBAR. Both change in the year you become a resident alien.
