Free Tax Filing for F-1 Students 2027
The short answer
Five ways to file a nonresident's Form 1040-NR and Form 8843 free in the 2027 tax season: F1TaxReturn, free for every student; Sprintax or Glacier Tax Prep, free where your school gives a code or licence; an IRS VITA site with a volunteer certified for foreign students; or the IRS forms filled in yourself. IRS Free File Fillable Forms did not offer Form 1040-NR in the 2026 filing season.
We make F1TaxReturn and rank it first only for what it is best at. Every other entry is described from its maker's own pages, linked under Sources with the day we read them. Ranked on:
- The federal return costs nothing, with no condition, or with the one condition named.
- It prepares Form 1040-NR and Form 8843 for a nonresident student.
- What a state return then costs, since few free routes include one.

01Can F-1 students file taxes for free?
Yes. F1TaxReturn prepares Form 1040-NR and Form 8843 for $0 with no code, a VITA site certified for foreign students prepares them free, and many schools give a free Sprintax code or Glacier Tax Prep licence.
02Does IRS Free File work for Form 1040-NR?
Free File Fillable Forms did not in the 2026 filing season: the IRS's list of its forms includes Form 1040 and not Form 1040-NR. IRS Direct File was not offered that season.
03Is the state return free too?
Rarely. F1TaxReturn's state forms are $30 plus a $2 fee per return in 9 states; Sprintax lists state returns from $49.95, and school codes cover the federal return. Glacier Tax Prep does not prepare state returns. A state with no income tax needs no state return.
04I had no income. Do I still file?
Yes, Form 8843 on its own, which is free: fill in the IRS PDF yourself or let F1TaxReturn fill it in, then mail it to the Austin address in its instructions.
Sources and how we checked
We make F1TaxReturn, so we compared it with what each company says on its own pages, read on the dates below and linked, and with the IRS's own publications. A company's page is the best source for what it sells; where it does not say, the table says so instead of guessing. Prices change each season: check the company's page before you buy.
