2027 tax season · 2026 returns
Best Tax Software for International Students 2027
The short answer
For the 2027 tax season (2026 returns, due April 15, 2027 with wages), the best tax software for a nonresident F-1 or J-1 student prepares Form 1040-NR and Form 8843, which rules out TurboTax and FreeTaxUSA. F1TaxReturn is best for a free federal return and a state return in 9 states; Sprintax is best if you want to e-file; Glacier Tax Prep is best if your school licenses it.
We make F1TaxReturn and rank it first only for what it is best at. Every other entry is described from its maker's own pages, linked under Sources with the day we read them. Ranked on:
- It prepares Form 1040-NR and Form 8843 for a nonresident. Anything that does not is listed below the ranking, not in it.
- What a student pays for the federal return without a school code, and for a state return and an amendment.
- Which income forms it takes (W-2, 1099, 1042-S, 1099-B) and which states it prepares.
- Whether it e-files, and who prepares the return: you, a volunteer or a professional.

01What is the best tax software for F-1 students in 2027?
One that prepares Form 1040-NR. F1TaxReturn prepares it free, with a $30 plus a $2 fee state return in 9 states; Sprintax e-files for eligible filers, from $54.95 without a school code; Glacier Tax Prep is free where your school licenses it.
02Can international students use TurboTax?
Not while they are nonresident aliens. Intuit says TurboTax does not support Form 1040-NR. Students who have become resident aliens, usually from their sixth calendar year, file Form 1040 and can use it.
03Is there free tax software for international students?
Yes. F1TaxReturn's Form 1040-NR and Form 8843 are $0 with no code. Sprintax and Glacier Tax Prep are free only where your school gives you a code or a licence, and a VITA site certified for foreign students prepares the return free.
04Which tax software can e-file Form 1040-NR?
Sprintax says it e-files the federal return for eligible filers, and TaxAct says it e-files Form 1040-NR. F1TaxReturn and Glacier Tax Prep prepare paper returns you mail.
05Why is F1TaxReturn first on a list F1TaxReturn wrote?
Because it is first for the case it serves: a nonresident student who wants the federal return free. Each entry says what it is best for and what to watch out for, and every fact about the others comes from their own pages, linked and dated. If you want to e-file, the list sends you to Sprintax.
Sources and how we checked
We make F1TaxReturn, so we compared it with what each company says on its own pages, read on the dates below and linked, and with the IRS's own publications. A company's page is the best source for what it sells; where it does not say, the table says so instead of guessing. Prices change each season: check the company's page before you buy.
