How long does a paper Indiana refund take?
Indiana says a refund can take up to 12 weeks to be issued if you mail a paper return.
The Indiana Department of Revenue does not say how soon a paper return first shows in Where's My Refund?
For example, if you mail it on March 1, 2027, the refund should come by May 24, 2027.
How do I check my Indiana refund status?
Use Where's My Refund? on intime.dor.in.gov.
It asks for these, in this order:
- ID Type. Social Security Number, or Individual Tax ID Number if you have an ITIN
- ID. Yours. You type it on the agency's own site
- Tax Year. The year the return is for, not the year you mail it
- Refund Amount. Whole dollars, from Form IT-40PNR line 21 (2025 forms)
What can slow down my Indiana refund?
Indiana checks every return for compliance and fraud, and a person reviews it if DOR's system spots a concern.
- If DOR mails you an ID Passcode Confirmation letter, your return is not processed until you confirm your identity. You get three attempts before the deadline in the letter, and DOR says to allow up to three weeks for the refund after that.
- If DOR cannot deposit the refund into the account on your return, for example one outside the United States, it mails a paper check.
What else should I know about Indiana's Where's My Refund?
It shows refunds from 2017 to the current tax year.
- DOR asks you to wait at least three to four weeks before calling Customer Service about a refund.
- Its automated refund line is 317-232-2240 (option 3), 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
