How long does a paper Michigan refund take?
Michigan gives no total time for a paper refund. Once your return is processed, it says to allow up to 5 to 7 business days for the refund to be issued.
Michigan says to allow 6 to 8 weeks from the day you mail a paper return before you check its status.
For example, if you mail it on March 1, 2027, its status can show in Where's My Refund? from April 12, 2027.
How do I check my Michigan refund status?
Use Where's My Refund? on mitreasury-eservices.michigan.gov. On MiTreasury eServices, choose "Where's My Refund?" under Refunds and Payments. You don't need to sign in with MiLogin.
It asks for these, in this order:
- ID Type. Social Security Number. The list has no ITIN option
- ID. Yours. You type it on the agency's own site
- Confirm ID. The same number again
- Tax Year. The year the return is for, not the year you mail it
- Refund Amount. The refund on your return. Michigan names no line; on the 2025 Form MI-1040 the refund is line 39
What can slow down my Michigan refund?
Michigan names mailing a paper return, not choosing direct deposit, errors on the return and returns picked for more review as the usual reasons a refund is slow.
- Treasury may ask you to confirm your identity, for example with an identity confirmation quiz, before it pays the refund.
- A direct deposit forwarded to a bank account in another country is returned to Treasury and sent as a check instead.
- If Treasury asks for more documents, it says to allow about 8 weeks after it gets your reply before you check again.
What else should I know about Michigan's Where's My Refund?

- The individual income tax line is 517-636-4486, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.
- Michigan law makes Treasury pay interest on a refund from 45 days after it receives the return or after the due date, whichever is later.
