How long does a paper New York refund take?
New York publishes no time for a paper refund. Once your return is processed, the tracker gives the date your refund is sent.
New York says a mailed return can take up to three weeks to post to its system.
For example, if you mail it on March 1, 2027, its status can show in Check Your Refund Status from March 22, 2027.
How do I check my New York refund status?
Use Check Your Refund Status on tax.ny.gov.
The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance describes these boxes on its help pages, so the wording on its site may differ a little:
- Social Security number. Yours. You type it on the agency's own site
- Tax year. The year the return is for, not the year you mail it
- Refund amount. Whole dollars, from Form IT-203 line 68 or Form IT-201 line 78 (2025 forms)
What else should I know about New York's Check Your Refund Status?
It updates whenever your return moves to a new stage; there is no set time.
- After four wrong tries it locks you out for 24 hours, so copy the amount exactly.
- If the refund is not sent within 45 days of the due date, or of when you filed if later, New York pays interest.
- Its automated line is 518-457-5149.
Can F1TaxReturn track my New York refund?
If you file your New York return with F1TaxReturn, your dashboard has a refund tracker: every box Check Your Refund Status asks for, filled in from your return except your SSN, with a copy button beside each, a timeline from the day you mail it, and an email when it is time to check.
F1TaxReturn prepares paper returns: you print, sign and mail them, and it never sees your refund status. Your federal return is free; the New York return is a paid add-on.
