How long does a paper New Jersey refund take?
New Jersey says at least 12 weeks after you mail your return, and 15 weeks or more for a paper return sent by certified mail.
The New Jersey Division of Taxation does not say how soon a paper return first shows in Where Is My Refund?
For example, if you mail it on March 1, 2027, the refund should not come before May 24, 2027.
How do I check my New Jersey refund status?
Use Where Is My Refund? on state.nj.us.
The New Jersey Division of Taxation describes these boxes on its help pages, so the wording on its site may differ a little:
- Social Security number. Yours. You type it on the agency's own site
- Refund amount. The refund requested on your return: Form NJ-1040NR line 64 (2025 forms)
What can slow down my New Jersey refund?
If the Division asks you to verify your identity, it does that through ID.me, and the refund waits until you have.
- If it is authenticating your return and asks for documents, you can check your refund status again only after its 90-day review period.
- A nonresident can be asked for W-2s and the wage allocation on the NJ-1040NR before the refund is paid.
What else should I know about New Jersey's Where Is My Refund?
The tool and the automated line, 1-800-323-4400, are open 24 hours a day and have the same information as the Division's customer service staff.
- Customer Service is 609-292-6400.
- New Jersey pays interest only when a refund takes more than six months from the claim, the payment or the due date, whichever is latest.
