What can slow down my Colorado refund?

Colorado names filing a paper return, choosing a paper check, errors on the return and returns picked for more review as reasons a refund can be slow. You get a letter for errors or a review.

  • Letters about refunds and identity verification are not forwarded by the post office, so keep your address up to date with the Tax Division.
  • If you get a Validation Key letter, complete its steps within 30 days of the date on it. If you do not, your return is not processed and the refund is not issued.

What else should I know about Colorado's Where's My Refund?

It shows the same refund status information as Department staff, and is updated regularly, so you can check it daily.

  • Instead of the refund amount, you can enter a PIN or Letter ID from a letter the Department sent you.
  • Once a refund is approved, a direct deposit can take up to 7 business days to show up. A check usually takes 7 to 10 business days in the post, occasionally up to 45 days.
  • The Taxpayer Helpline is (303) 238-7378, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. MT, Monday to Friday.
