How long does a paper Wisconsin refund take?
Wisconsin publishes no processing time for a paper return. It says filing on paper could delay your refund.
Wisconsin asks you to wait at least 12 weeks after filing Form 1NPR before you contact it about your refund, and says refund information may not be available until then.
How do I check my Wisconsin refund status?
Use Where's My Refund on tap.revenue.wi.gov.
It asks for these, in this order:
- Tax Year. The year the return is for, not the year you mail it
- SSN / ITIN:. Yours. You type it on the agency's own site
- Refund Claimed. The refund on your return: Form 1NPR line 71 (2025 forms)
What can slow down my Wisconsin refund?
Wisconsin may not issue a refund before March 1 unless both you and your employer have filed all required returns and forms for the year.
- Its fraud and error safeguards can delay some refunds up to 12 weeks.
- If DOR suspects identity fraud, it writes to you and asks you to verify your identity, by a quiz, a PIN or documents. Complete everything by the due date in the letter. If you do not send documents within 30 days of the letter, the refund is not issued.
- If the wages on your return differ from what your employers reported, DOR asks for information first. Processing can take up to 12 weeks after it receives everything.
- A credit claim picked for review can also delay a refund. It does not necessarily mean something is wrong.
- Do not staple a paper return. Stapling delays processing and any refund.
